Supreme Court Condemns UP for Unauthorized House Demolition, Orders Rs. 25 Lakh Compensation
The Supreme Court on Wednesday reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government for demolishing an individual’s home without adhering to proper legal procedures. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra described the demolition as “high-handed” and unauthorized. They questioned the state’s actions, asking, “How can you just enter someone’s home and demolish it without following the course of law or serving notice?” As a result, the Court ordered the UP government to pay Rs. 25 lakh as punitive compensation and directed it to initiate criminal proceedings against those responsible for the demolition. The order must be implemented within a month, according to the Court’s instructions.
