In the case of Draupadi Devi vs. District Basic Education Officer and others, the Allahabad High Court recently pointed out that teacher absenteeism in primary schools is a major problem affecting the state's education system, and it should be addressed with proper legal action.
The Court asked the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Basic Education to submit a report explaining what steps the UP Government has taken in the past to tackle this issue and what future plans they have to ensure teachers regularly attend school.
This observation was made by Justice Ajay Bhanot while hearing a case filed by Draupadi Devi, a primary school teacher from Mau district. She had challenged the government's decision to withhold her salary due to her alleged absence from school.
The UP government defended its decision, stating that Draupadi Devi had frequently missed work, disrupting the school's academic activities and putting its future at risk. In response, the Court directed the lawyer representing the Basic Shiksha Adhikari to file a report explaining why no disciplinary action was taken against her for being absent without approval. The Court also asked for information on the steps taken to ensure teachers regularly attend schools.
